Work & Passion

Justin

the sommelier

Justin Leone has worked in several countries among the most acclaimed Chefs in the world and in the most respected of cellars. As a result, he has become an internationally recognized standard for excellence, expertise, professionalism and in particular, a character all his own.

From 3* Michelin and #1 restaurant in North America Alinea in Chicago under the famous Grant Achatz, to 2* Michelin Marcus Wareing in London, to the legendary 2* Tantris in Munich: As a Chef Sommelier, Justin’s career has spanned two decades and several continents.

During this time, he has been recognized with numerous awards, including “Jury Honors – Best Wine List in the World” twice and “Best Wine Pairing & By-the-Glass” from the prestigious “World of Fine Wine Magazine”. The “Prix Le Montrachet” awarded Justin as the best Burgundy sommelier in Germany, and in 2013 he received the title of “Sommelier of the Year, Germany” from the leading European culinary magazine “Rolling Pin”.

Justin Leone believes that no sommelier should dare don the Windsor-knotted tie without having their his hands deep in the soil himself. That’s why he spent nearly a year in Burgundy, studying the intricate terroirs and winemaking of France’s most hallowed regions – all under the watchful eye of superstar Nicolas Potel of the eponymous Négociant firm and later Domaine de Bellene.

Right at his time in Chicago, he also worked behind some of the best bars in the US. He was a graduate of the charter class of Chicago’s first United States Bartending Guild, which earned him a spot as national mixologist for Svedka Vodka and Mid-Western mixologist-consultant for Heaven Hill Distilleries. He knows better than anyone that being a sommelier doesn’t start at the cellar door, but from there on into the blood.

Justin

the musician

Justin spent his youth studying violin and double bass with California’s finest teachers, including Dennis Trembley, principal conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This earned him a scholarship to study Classical Performance and English Literature at the prestigious Indiana University – Bloomington, one of America’s leading schools of classical music.

After playing his first punk rock show on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles at the age of 14, Justin joined the Chicago acoustic rock band Three Minute Mile. Thus, he spent the following years writing two studio albums and touring in support of artists such as the Foo Fighters, John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band, OK Go, The New Pornographers, Willie Nelson, Michelle Branch, Mike Watt and many others.

Justin then took a musical hiatus of ten years. When the yearning for music became too much, Justin returned to active duty and joined the indie pop band The Fillies in Munich. Together they recorded an EP that was placed in the top indie playlists on Spotify and had songs playing on German radio.

All these stops and four music videos later, the band now calls itself Wonderful Bones, consists only of Justin and Dimi Katsavaris (songwriting/production/vocals/guitar), who works behind the scenes and on tour. The band is sponsored by renowned clothing label Drykorn For Beautiful People, represented by elite booking agency Karsten Jahnke Konzertdirektion, and managed by promoter and producer Mario Mendrzycki, who has worked with Santana and New Kids On The Block.

Currently, Justin can be found with bass in hand at his wine and music tastings for groups, companies and large corporations both live and digitally. Wonderful Bones’ debut EP is coming soon!
